Extending “hallway” element must be a top priority for the Gateway Mall

The hallway — that wide sidewalk along the north side of Market St — is what will eventually tie the blocks of the Gateway Mall together.

Unfortunately as well designed as Citygarden is, when built they didn’t plan to connect the hallway element to the blocks to the east and west. The crossing at 9th Street meets the design criteria of the master plan but at 8th and a 10th it was somehow forgotten. Hopefully we will get all the blocks from Broadway (5th)  and 20th.  Right now we have only the two between 8th and 10th.  Going forward we will need to make sure as each block is done that we plan ahead for the next adjacent block.

Agree, but isn't that a “well, duh!” observation? Oh yeah, this is city government we're talking about! 😉

    • Planning for the extension of the hallway across 8th & 10th would have been a “well duh” to me but nobody thought to do it so I'm not going to assume anything.

There aren't any curb extensions protruding into Chestnut at any cross street, either.

My biggest problem with architects in general is their tendency to design things on blank sheets of paper. The approaches are almost always forgotten about.

Steve, that's a great picture and you're most certainly right. Extending the hallway concept ought to be at the top of the list for future enchancements.

I'd also like the see the arch grounds along Memorial incorporate the Hallway idea so there is a thematic connection between the mall and the arch grounds. I know that's for the design competition people to work out, but it seems reasonable to me.

Is it possible to build something like that on the side of the Courthouse though?
