Locust, Lindell, other streets go car-free Saturday May 1st

April 29, 2010 Pedestrian Mall, Transportation 3 Comments

Saturday May 1, 2010 from 8am to 1pm several streets in our city will be car-free:

This first of four events opens five miles along Locust and Lindell for you to enjoy. That’s right, car-free City streets!

Open Streets is a FREE community event. You’re invited to take to the streets to walk, bike, visit other neighborhoods, rediscover the City and experience the Great Rivers Greenway’s Bike St. Louis routes.

Three activity hubs located along the length of the route host a variety of fun activities – aerobics, zumba, hula-hooping, yoga, walking tours and safety and health demonstrations.

Open Streets promises to be interesting. I’ll participate –seems silly not to given that I live on the route:

My concern is events like this will lead to calls for the creation of new car-free pedestrian malls.

Thank you for putting MetroLink stations on your map, Steve. I hope most people will use their bikes or walk from Metro.
My concern is disruption to bus routes, used by people who must get to work and do their shopping on Saturdays – plus the added automobile congestion on side streets. I live near the Lindell portion so frequently ride the #10 which is being re-routed to Forest Park Parkway. This will create difficulties for hundreds of people who depend on Lindell Marketplace (yes, it is ugly and anti-urban but it is always busy). Let the buses through – they don't run frequently anyway, as we know, but that would allow participants access without their cars and would not negatively impact the non-leisured class.

They need to think this through better if they do it again. They have my apartment building surounded by these no driving streets and I was late to class this morning. People can walk and ride bikes in the park.
