Mokwa and Joyce to Converse with the Community on June 15th

June 4, 2005 25th Ward 1 Comment

St. Louis Police Chief Joseph Mokwa and St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce will be at an event billed as a “conversation with the community” on June 15th, 2005 at 7pm. From the meeeting notice:

“Learn more about our changing neighborhood. Ask questions. Be informed. An opportunity to hear and be heard by your community officials.”

Wow, that is a lot for one meeting. I hope it is not like most where someone in the audience makes a series of incoherent statements during the question period rather than ask a question. I also hope that Mokwa and Joyce can get beyond political sound bite answers.

The event is sponsored by and located at the Saint Louis Altenheim assisted and long term care living facility on the Missouri river bluffs. Their address is 5408 South Broadway, 63111 (map). They are easily accessible by bike although I don’t know about bike parking. The #40 Broadway bus would drop you off right in front of the building (PDF schedule & route map).

You don’t suppose that the “conversation with the community” might actually be about the rapidly changing neighborhood around St. Louis Altenheim, do you?

Aother rapidly changing community is located just south of the Sisters of St. Joseph’s of Carondelet Convent.

At their annual house tour and artisan fair, one of the kind sisters told me that the site currently being graded on the south side of the convent is under development for new homes offering views of the Mississippi River and Illinois. Interesting.

[REPLY – I was just down there yesterday to see the site. From what I understand they are grading the site to the point it will destroy having any views of the river! They are basically removing the mound so the site slopes downward just like the adjacent blocks do. Pity. – Steve]

Sorry, I couldn’t disagree more. Big box retail is successful not because people enjoy 100,000 sqft of hardware staffed by minimally trained staff, but because they consistently have the best prices. PERIOD. I would love to make all my purchases from Edele & Mertz on Broadway but usually Big Box pricing beats Edele’s convenience. Folks need to stop denying the obvious. Piggly Wiggly and A&P put mom & pop out of business in the 40’s, Schnucks (a former Northside corner store) ran out A&P, National, IGA. And now Sam’s is putting the hurt on Schnucks such that they would love to sell but can’t.

You’re kidding right? From the spot where I could view the grading yesterday, it appeared to be at the same elevation as the Srs of St. Joseph’s Mother House, where you do get views of the River.

Thinking further on it, even if they graded the site below the convent’s floor elevation, wouldn’t their still be unobstructed views to the east? What is there that rises to the east of these sites that could possibly block river views?

The convent fronts Minnesota, and the next street east is Pennsylvania. If memory serves, the elevation of Pennsylvania is about fifty feet below Minnesota as it passes around the 6400 block.

So it’s hard to figure how a lot adjacent to the convent wouldn’t have a clear view east, even after a significant amount of earth moving….

Maybe it’s time for a little “urban exploring?

    😉
