Readers favorite St. Louis beer is…

Author:Steve Patterson November 10th, 2009

My poll last week was not about a serious issue facing St. Louis.  Instead the question asked readers to vote for their favorite St. Louis beer.  The winner by a huge margin was Schlafly. For readers from out of town, co-founder Tom Schlafly is a nephew of Eagle Forum founder Phyllis Schlafly.   She is not part of the beer business.

I’ve been doing these polls for months now and none has generated as many votes as this. The recent poll on Rush Limbaugh buying the Rams was the top vote getter, over 300 votes.  While that is a great number it is less than 10% of the 3,349 visitors during the week.  Here are the final numbers:

  • Schlafly 193 (64%)
  • Anheuser Busch 25 (8%)
  • Square One Brewery 23 (8%)
  • O’Fallon Brewery 17 (6%)
  • I don’t drink beer/no opinion 14 (5%)
  • Mattingly Brewing 13 (4%)
  • Buffalo Brewing 5 (2%)
  • Trailhead Brewery 5 (2%)
  • Morgan Street Brewery 3 (1%)
  • Other answer… 2 (1%)
  • Amalgamated Brewery 1 (0%)
  • Alandale Brewing 0 (0%)
  • Augusta Brewery 0 (0%)

One of the two “other” votes was anything smoke-free.  Agreed.

I too favor Schlafly’s beer but I also like the fact they opened up in December 1991 in a then desolate part of downtown.  There were no lofts.  There were few restaurants and few businesses of any type.   1991 was my first full year living in St. Louis and their place, The Tap Room, made me think downtown would soon be thriving as others joined in.  Downtown is now a great place but it just took 15 more years than I thought.

From Schlafly.com:

The two adjoining buildings that house our location in downtown St. Louis were completed in 1902 and 1904 and had been built with super-heavy steel reinforced beams to house the printing presses that would occupy the space for the next 65 years. The designer was Samuel L. Scherer, a self-educated architect. Scherer was a student of Ruskin, Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement in England. He was known to say that “architecture is the most useful of the fine arts and the finest of the useful arts.” He later became the first Director of the St. Louis Art Museum.

On their website they have great pictures of a massive fire at 21st & Locust (map) in 1976 when a few major buildings were completely destroyed.  For me much of the appeal of a local brewery is how they can fit into our urban neighborhoods.

If you drink please do so responsibly.

I love schlafly products, and i can eat vegan pizza at the bottleworks, which makes me happy. however, i've heard that Tom Schlafly is one of the biggest supporters of the local republican party and invest a considerable amount of money into fighting same-sex marriages. can anyone confirm/deny these rumors? if true, not sure how i feel about giving him my money to use towards those causes.

Tom Schlafly does not share the politics of his more famous aunt, the conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly. He's a Democrat. In fact, I thought this was common knowledge. See Tom Schlafly's interview in St. Louis magazine: http://www.stlmag.com/media/St-Louis-Magazine/J...
  • Anyone who gives money to the Catholic church is funding the fight against same-sex marriage. I don't know his personal political views.

Steve, that is out of line. Plenty of folks give to their struggling parishes without the intent that the money will go to fighting same-sex marriages. Watch the generalizations in this instance.
  • I didn't say that was the intent of those who donate but as we know that is the reality.
  • maryhoman
That is NOT the reality. What Archbishop Carlson did was to take $10,000 from private gifts. That is not the same pool of money that people give in their weekly envelopes. Most likely, these donors actually earmarked the money for this cause. I'm not excusing it. I am simply asking you not relegate all of us Catholics into the same category.
  • As with any organization the leaders don't reflect the views of all the followers. I recognize that those who practice any religion have independent views from higher ups and from each other.

I have to assume Schlafly's win in this poll has more to do with what what the brewery's commitment to the city and the community than with the actual quality of their beer, which in my opinion is pretty mediocre.

I think it varies. The Pale Ale and Pilsner certainly do not stand out, but the Kolsch and APA (to cite two examples) compare favorably to better known craft breweries. The Kolsch strikes me as something that could be marketed nationally down the road.

Also, in response to an earlier poster, I think we're well past the point where drinking something other than Bud Light is snobby.

No doubt Todd, they're no Russian River Brewing, but compared AB-Bud Light or Bud (or anything else AB offers FTM) Schlafly stands out as better...

It is kind of funny, I hear that Schlafly is everyones favorite... but when i go out to the bars, I hardly ever see people actually ordering it. It is still almost all Anheuser products. I mean cant complain, at least most people here drink from the local brews (that includes AB.)
  • Andy
I love how people like to be all snobby about what beer they like when in reality everyone would rather just have a Bud Light, some are just too wrapped up in their fake hipster image to admit it.
  • Mike
I'd rather drink warm goat piss than Bud Light. I would rather lose an arm than use that arm to carry a 6-pack or 12-pack of Bud Light. People drink AB products because they're easier on the wallet than microbrews, especially in volume.
  • 1schlaflyfan
ab is not a local brew, it's belgian owned, if you really want to consider it a beer
  • AB products are brewed in St. Louis. It has been owned by shareholders for decades.

Can you still show the most recent comments on the right side of the home page?
  • That was one of the 3 view options in the right. I just changed it so that is the only view.

And of course Schlafly has been part of the rebirth of Maplewood too with a nice reuse of a former supermarket.
