St. Louis Sponsoring Photo Contest, Images for New Website

citysite The City of Saint Louis is working on a long overdue new website and is seeking images to use throughout the site, click on the image at right for all the details.

Calling all photographers! The City of St. Louis is looking for great photos of St. Louis to feature on our new website. A new City of St. Louis website is planned for 2008 and we’re looking for pictures that show our city’s unique character and beauty. Whether you’re a professional photographer, or just like to take pictures, we invite you to submit photos.  

So now is your chance to have your images of St. Louis be seen by thousands.  Hurry, the deadline is November 1st.

Each contributor is limited to five images so I’m having issues editing my nearly 30,000 images down to just five.  With Loughborough Commons, the demolition of the Century Building, the countless parking garages, Sullivan Place, Southtowne Center and such it is really tough —- I have so many great images of St. Louis.  Oh wait, they want unique character AND beauty.   Well, that leaves out all of the above.  However, I probably can find five images to submit and if not I may just be forced to go out looking for the character and beauty that St. Louis does still have left.

    I'm taking pictures of hoosiers. There are so many to choose from! I'll head down to the state streets this weekend.

    I think it's important to note that the city is, essentially, trying to get something for nothing with this contest. If you "win," your work would be available for re-use by the City in any capacity, and it would be further available for use by third parties with no oversight and no compensation. This is the kind of thing that hurts the photographic community by furthering the notion that good photography can come cheap or, in this case, completely free. And of course, they aren't asking for model releases or anything else that would protect the people who are featured in selected photos - imagine becoming the posterchild for St. Louis without giving consent!

    Who (or what) is a "Central Scrutinizer"? Or am I missing something?
  • Tomorrow is the day- last day to put them out there. Good luck however as I just tried to upload some. Its a mess! First they get confusing by stating in the rules that all photos combined must be under 5mb, but if you go to the submit page to upload it says "each" photo must be under 5mb. Then they accept TIF or Jpeg. I couldn't get the jpegs to work, so I finally was able to upload TIFFS, but then they dont show up on the website.

    Hopefully you will have better luck, no matter which of the 30,000 you submit.
