What About an Ikea for St. Louis?

July 28, 2005 Sunday Poll 37 Comments

I’ve been an loyal Ikea shopper for about 15 years this month. I’ve been to five of their stores in the suburbs of Washington D.C., Seattle, New Jersey, Oakland (CA) and Chicago. Many of us in St. Louis make the pilgrimage to Chicago to buy great (& cheap) products.

I think we need an Ikea. Most people would likely agree. The issue of where should an Ikea go is the subject of debate. In the suburbs at St. Louis Mills Outlet Mall? Northwest Plaza? Crestwood? I’ve always thought in Illinois near a MetroLink line would be wise. Some want a store in the City of St. Louis – suggesting the old MSD location at I-44 and Hampton.

What are you thoughts on an Ikea store for the St. Louis region?
It is a big box with massive parking, it belongs in the ‘burbs.
I want it in the City of St. Louis even though it is a big box.
The St. Louis region NEEDS an Ikea – put it anywhere they’ll go.
We don’t need an Ikea – Chicago is close enough.

New Poll on Washington Avenue Parking

I think by now it is pretty clear that I am in favor of parking on Washington Avenue. In my efforts to get parking on the street I’ve decided to conduct my own non-scientific poll on the topic to see what others think.

[NOTE: This post first appeared on 7/17 but I have updated it and moved it to today (7/20). If you have not voted yet please read on and vote.]

I personally would like to see on-street parking all the way to the Eads bridge. I would exclude no part of the street such as in front of the convention center or convention hotel. I’d be OK with a few spaces maybe as 15 minute maximum to allow someone to run into Starbucks. Having valet permits such as they do West of Tucker would also be acceptable.

However, for the purposes of this poll I’m limiting the area to the four blocks from 8th to Tucker. The argument in favor of on-street parking is that it provides a buffer between vehicles and pedestrians, it calms traffic, it provides good short-term spaces necessary to support retail businesses, it makes sidewalk dining more pleasant and gives the general impression to visitors that things are happening in the area.

I’ve supplied a wide range of possible answers ranging from no restrictions (my ideal) to a full ban (what we have now). I’ve included the option in the answer to exclude big events. Some answers are for certain times only. You are only allowed to vote once so make it count.

On-street Parking on Washington Avenue East of Tucker should be…

If you feel I should have included another possible answer please let me know in the comments section.

[UPDATED 7/20 @ 10AM. In three days nearly 70 people have voted. Over 90% are in favor of having on-street parking at all times, ignoring rush hour. The only difference being special events like a RAMS game. In retrospect I should have done an option that excluded M-F 7am-9am and 4pm-6pm. Again, if you haven’t voted please do so.]

Changes to Urban Review – St. Louis

May 2, 2005 Site Info 2 Comments

Categories

This weekend tech guru Brian Marston updated my blog to show the categories I’ve been using for entries. This will hopefully make it easier to review archives. Please note that some entries are in multiple categories.

If you have suggestions on new categories for me to use please let me know in the comments below.

Local Sponsorship

We are talking with some locally owned businesses about sponsoring my site and others in the St. Louis Syndicate. The exact form the ads will take on (banner, side display ad, etc…) has yet to be determined. We are still working on pricing as well. Part of the answer is in the level of interest from local business owners. If you have interested please send me an email. In the meantime click on a Google ad in the right column to help out.

News Aggregators

This isn’t a change so much as a technological note. With the substantial amount of information available on the internet it is increasingly difficult to check all the various web sites for interesting information. With RSS & Atom feeds you don’t need to go to the news – the news will come to you. Including Urban Review – St. Louis!

You don’t need to worry about the types of feeds and how it all works. All you need to know are some choices of applications. For recommended news aggregators click here. This list includes recommendations for Mac, Windows and other operating systems.

If you are lucky enough to use a Macintosh computer from Apple you may want to consider upgrading your operating system to the new OSX 10.4 “Tiger” which was released on Friday. It has integrated RSS support in the Safari browser. I haven’t upgraded yet but I plan to do so in the next few weeks.

Notifications

If you are not ready to make the jump to RSS feeds but want to know when I’ve added a new entry to Urban Review – St. Louis you can sign-up to receive “notifications” via email. Each time I make a new entry you will receive a brief email with a link to the new entry. Your privacy is protected – the list is never used for any other purpose. To begin receiving notifications send an email to this address.

Not Getting Enough of My Views?

Ever wonder about my thoughts on issues such as music, TV, advertising and other pop culture issues? Oh, you haven’t huh? Well, fine. Oh wait, I see a couple of hands in the back of the room. For the few of you that are curious I’ve got a new blog devoted to all those subjects not covered here on Urban Review – St. Louis. The new blog is called, Steve’s Thoughts. Check it out. And yes, RSS feeds are available for the new site as well.

And don’t forget, I have a site on St. Louis’ 25th Aldermanic Ward. The look has just been updated and I will be posting new information this week on local meetings, happenings and neighborhood issues. Not for everyone but if you live in or around the area you may find it interesting. RSS feeds and notifications are also available for this site.

Podcasts

I am working on the next installment of my podcasting. It takes quite a bit of time to put together just a short podcast. I’ve started recording short segments as they come to me so as I get enough I will be putting them together for broadcast.

Links and More LInks

I have some great links in the right hand column so be sure to check those out. I am also working on adding a substantial number of links. These will be in clearly marked categories to make it easy to find what you are looking for.

Thanks for reading Urban Review – St. Louis!

Podcast #2 – Taxes, Gas and such

April 16, 2005 Site Info 3 Comments

It look me a bit more time than I had hoped between my first podcast and this one. I thought it would be easier to just ramble on about topics rather than have to type them out but boy was I wrong. It is still fun so I will keep doing them.

Click here to listen to my second postcast on taxes, gas prices, Mascoutah, IL, South Broadway Bridge and Lemay. I start and end with a little music. Total time is just over 6 minutes. As always, feedback is appreciated.
