Sign the Recall Florida Petition at Tower Grove Park on Saturday

Volunteers will be taking signatures from folks wanting to sign the Recall Florida petition this Saturday from 9am to 11am near the new Tower Grove Farmer’s Market. Look for volunteers in Recall Florida t-shirts near the new Tower Grove Farmer’s Market opening this Saturday just West of the Pool Pavilion. This is just West of the main traffic circle, see #20 on this map.

Be sure to check out the market but it looks quite promising with some great vendors lined up. It will run every Saturday into October.

[UPDATE 5/11/06 @ 11:45am. I revised the headline to remove the Farmer’s Market reference. I also made it clear the volunteers with the petition will not be in the market but near the market. As people have commented, this market is a great thing for the city and has absolutely zero involvement with the recall effort.]

Any chance the bathrooms @ the Pool Pavilion will be reopened by then?

It’s kind of a pain for families to have to shlep over from the playground all the way to the other side of the tennis courts to go potty.

Or will the Farmer’s Market organizers provide Port-A-Potties?

Public restrooms – just another amenity that makes city life more livable!

I know its a good opportunity for the group to collect the signatures of a lot of neighborhood people, but something rubs me the wrong way about injecting politics into this positive event for the neighborhood that so many people have been looking forward to.

I think it will be a great community gathering place and forum to discuss and promote issues, but it would have been nice to just enjoy the opening weekend without politics and controversy.

[REPLY Many people are asking to be able to sign the petition, not wanting to wait until volunteers get to their blocks. I’m told this will be 2-3 people with clipboards, not a big protest or anything like that. They will be outside the market and ending at 11am when the opening festivities for the market begins. I think these efforts show a sense of respect for the events and those participating while at the same time making it easier for those that do wish to sign the petition. – SLP]

  3. As the organizer and developer of the Tower Grove Farmers’ Market, I must point out that our organization is not affiliated with the effort to recall Jennifer Florida in any way, nor are we affiliated with this proposed petition signing. We are a non-profit and therefore non-political entity and our only goal is to bring fresh and healthy food into a community space where all residents will feel welcome. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

    Thanks, Patrick Horine

According to the annouoncement I received a few days ago, Jennifer florida is scheduled to speak at the “opening ceremonies” – might make for some interesting discussion!

[REPLY – I don’t think anyone wants to see this turn into a debate, protest or shouting match. This is simply an opportunity where many 15th Ward voters will be in a single spot. – SLP]

The farmers market in TG park idea is great. Location in is in the middle (walkable) of three neighborhoods that are sadly lacking in accessibility to real food. At our neighborhood market in Shaw, their idea of “produce” is 3 shriveled potatoes. Its no surprise that kids are walking around with a honey bun and red “juice” for breakfast. And I dont just dislike that as a food lover. Urban neighborhoods are blighted by diabetes, obesity, etc.
I hope the market organizers reach out to everyone in the neighborhoods. The list of vendors look promising. Done right, this place could create a culture that improves everyones eating.
