Conservative, Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight White American Males

December 22, 2007 Popular Culture 12 Comments

This week I’m going to depart from my usual format and bring you some of my favorite items from popular culture.

‘Conservative, Christian, Right-Wing Republican, Straight White American Males’ is the title of one of my favorite folks songs, by the wonderful Todd Snider.

Here is a cute non-official video for the song:

Here are the lyrics (source):

Conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American male.
Gay bashin’, black fearin’, poor fightin’, tree killin’, regioal leaders of sales
Frat housin’, keg tappin’, shirt tuckin’, back slappin’ haters of hippies like me.
Tree huggin’, peace lovin’, pot smokin’, porn watchin’ lazyass hippies like me.
Tree huggin’, love makin’, pro choicen, gay weddin’, widespread diggin’ hippies like me.
Skin color-blinded, conspiracy-minded, protestors of corporate greed,
We who have nothing and most likely will ‘till we all wind up locked up in jails
By conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American males,.

Diamonds and dogs, boys and girls, living together in two separate worlds
Following leaders of mountains of shame, looking for someone to blame.

Diamonds and dogs, boys and girls, living together in two separate worlds
Following leaders of mountains of shame, looking for someone to blame.
I know who I like to blame:

Conservative Christian, right wing Republican, straight, white, American males,
Soul savin’, flag wavin’, Rush lovin’, land pavin’ personal friends to the Quayles
Quite diligently workin’ so hard to keep the free reins of this Democracy
From tree huggin’, peace lovin’, pot smokin’, barefootin’ folk-singin’ hippies like me.
Tree huggin’, peace lovin’, pot smokin’, porn watchin’ lazyass hippies like me.

The song can be purchased on iTunes.

Lots of stereotypes in there. Those of you still around this week, discuss.

I see the Church of the Sub-Genius and their ilk all over this one. and we thought the Unitarians were a threat.

  2. Lo says:

Not half as good as Jesse Irwin’s Ladusier!

[SLP — Yes, agreed —that was going to be another post!  That’s OK, I’ve got another favorite among his work.]

  3. james gaston says:

Reinforces a central Obama theme: that to a growing number of Americans, a politics that’s centered on aging Baby Boomers arguing about Woodstock is actually incomprehensible. Quayles?

[SLP — It was current at the time it was written and recorded.]

  4. Don't agree with the song says:

What is the problem with being a straight white male? It seems the artist is trying to say it is wrong to hate…but then he makes hateful statements! Also, tucking in your shirt is wrong?…don’t most people have to tuck in their shirts for their jobs?

  5. MerryChristmas says:

My wish for new years. For all those who shop and Trader Joe’s, World Market, or Whole foods to leave their anecdotes at the door. Please do not feel compelled to mention your visit to a grocer. It’s not interesting to the rest of us. Enjoy your shopping, and leave us alone. We don’t bore you with stories of magical times at Aldi’s or Shop and Save.

Now about this poorly written song and animation. It’s not a good song, and it’s not really funny.
But it does list all of the groups one can be a bigot towards.

Ah, nothing like a hateful-unfunny song around the holidays.

Now, give me a song about fat pedestrian friendly vegetarians, who live in mostly wealthy white areas and preach to me about transportation, racism and hate. Is that song available for download on itunes?

  6. John W. says:

yeah, it can be found over at the Fox News Channel, or any other outlet from News Corps. Perhaps you can find it at Wal-Mart, or in the waiting room at the Hummer dealership, or…

    Beck Lyrics

    1994

Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs (yellow Sweat) Lyrics

Acid casualty with a reposessed car
    Vietnam vet playin’ air guitar

    It’s just the shit-kickin’, speed-takin’, truck-drivin’
    neighbours downstairs
    Yeah
    Yeah

    Whiskey stained buck-toothed backwoods creep
Grizzly bear motherfucker never goes to sleep

    It’s just the shit-kickin’, speed-takin’, truck-drivin’
    neighbours downstairs
    Oh, yeah
    Yeah

Belly floppin’ naked in a pool of yellow sweat
Screamin’ jackass with a wet cigarette

    It’s just the shit-kickin’, speed-takin’, truck-drivin’
    neighbours downstairs
    Oh
    Oh, my goodness
    Oh… [etc…]
    Mmm… [etc…]

    Psychotic breakdown double-edged axe
Growin’ hair like a shag rug on a greasy back

    It’s just the shit-kickin’, speed-takin’, truck-drivin’
    neighbours downstairs
    Oh my goodness
    Oh my goodness
[Sung under the following:] Oh… [etc…]
    Oh, yeah
Come on, Honey, feel the grease
    Grease, grease
Come on, Honey, feel the grease
    Oh, my goodness
Come on, Honey, feel the grease
    Oh yeah
Come on, lay it on me
Bring it down one more time
    Come on, Honey…

MerryChristmas, I’m assuming you did it on purpose to bait some one into correcting you but Trader Joe’s and Aldi’s are the same company. The dollars end up in the same bucket.

[SLP – Actually, they are not the same company.  Aldi’s stores in the US are owned by the brother of the guy that owns the Trader Joes chains in the US as well as Aldi stores on other parts of the world.  Both brothers are living but were born in 1920 and 1922.]

Sean Hannity told him to do it.

  10. SpikedHeelsOnLongLegs says:

John W is one smug arrogant holier-than-thou know it all Christless bleeding heart slogan repeating blow hole who has yet to add anything of value to any of these conversations other than an aloof and hateful bad taste. Merry Christmas John W, I look forward to your next insult to intelligence, human kind and peaceful existance. Johns idea of clever reparte’ is to accuse someone of watching Fox news and shopping at Walmart. John is the classic example of a big man behind a keyboard, behind a username, behind a closed door – little man, little ideas, big words.

  11. John W. says:

…and all that without ever having met me? Man, posting in blogs sure is fun, isn’t it?

i found the lyrics’ point of view confusing, but anyway… it’s trendy to insult str8 white guys without guilt; you’re hearing resentment built-up over decades, centuries, millenia, deserved or not. it’s not a matter of ‘you’re all always wrong’ vs.’ there’s nothing wrong with you’, the point is that everyone can improve themselves and help others to improve themselves, to get along better. str8 white men are relatively new to open hostility in america and don’t have the tools to put it into perspective. you have advantages you may only be beginning to realize — often through the increasingly loud voices of others. appreciate your advantages but don’t abuse them. i realize being a str8 white male can be no advantage, sometimes a disadvantage. your resentment is understandable to me. i’m a tall friendly blue-eyed guy who speaks english clearly; which smooths out a lot of life’s bumps but some are suspicious of. however, it’s my gay part that, while conditions are slowly improving, attracted and attracts abuse. it was painful to scuttle the str8 white male persona i tried to live half my life because it’s what most of you demanded, at times with emotional or physical violence. i realize str8 white guys also know about struggles with rejection and conformity. the happy future of the str8 white american male must balance empathy with sense of self that encourages the same from your critics. you’ll be a fashionable target for a long time to come, so find ways to make it easier for yourselves and your sons. btw your children or your grands will include homosexuality, themselves or their friends. please get the social tools to cope with the blessing of their emotional honesty if you haven’t already — resentment of you may cause them to cut you off as i had to cut myself off from my family.
