Street Performers in the CWE

May 1, 2009 Central West End 8 Comments

One of my wishes for St. Louis is to have more street performers.  I included this on my list on Monday, prompting an email from a reader.

Here is the text from the announcement:

Join your friends and neighbors for Fabulous Fridays!
The North Euclid Merchants
put together this great promotion
Every Friday from 5:00 to 10:00!

Alternating Entertainment which will include:

  • Classical Guitarists
  • Portrait Painters and other Artists
  • Fire Dancers
  • Jugglers and Dancers

Enjoy dining in the neighborhood and extended shopping hours too!

See you on Fabulous Fridays!

I’d like to see us get to the point where street performers randomly appear in busy areas rather than have to be something staged by merchants.  This is the correct first step to get to that point.  More merchant groups should look at hiring street performers & vendors to bring the sidewalks to life.  I may not get the Euclid & McPherson tonight but you can be assured I will soon.

I second your opinion. Nothing but good things can come from street performers randomly appearing on busy corners.

I don’t mean to sound negative. But that is perhaps the funniest sentence I have seen this week, “In the Fashionable Central West End”, it is so stupid, it is funny. It is a sentence that actually. . .well, let us say they were not thinking of me when they wrote it. I am many things, fashionable is not one of them.

john m is right it is a badly chosen adjective that doesn’t need to be said and some residents (of long standing) won’t appreciate it.

I am guessing the wording was not crafted to appeal to “residents (of long standing)” but to people who will come there from outside and spend money. People who live in the CWE already spend money there so they probably don’t have to worry about targeting advertising to them so much. It’s about creating an atmosphere and a perception. I think “fashionable” is spot on for that purpose.

Dustin just called me old, now that is spot on.
